This article is about the Swedish poker player. You may be looking for the Norweigan father of Helga Dahl. Olaf Gunderson was a Swedish poker player that lived in Southampton, England. Hewas Sven Gunderson's brother, who planned on boarding the RMS Titanic with him with third class tickets. Despite having spent much money on the tickets, he and his brother still had substantial money, enough.
This week’s example of poker on screen is in a movie that won an incredible 11 Oscars (or Academy Awards), still a record to this day. Despite being about a sinking ship, it was far from it at the box office. Yes, we’re talking about the 1997 movie, Titanic. Directed by James Cameron, the film garnered immense critical acclaim for the performances of both its leading man and lady in Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet, but in the poker scene, it’s only Leo who is present. That’s because Di Caprio’s character, Jack Dawson hasn’t even got a ticket to board the ill-fated ship.
The poker game in question is with Jack and his friend Fabrizio, an Italian who we see is criticizing Jack for risking money in a hand which he’s never going to win.

Jack Dawson then utters the immortal line: “When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose.”
The two men Jack and Fabrizio share the table with, brothers Sven and Olaf Gunderson, however, have risked two third class tickets to board the Titanic against Jack and Fabrizio’s last dimes.
With some dog-eared cards, plenty of trading cards goes on and while Fabrizio is getting nowhere, it’s clear that Jack is.
“The moment of truth – somebody’s life is about to change.”
Jack is only up against Sven after both Fabrizio and Olaf admit that they have nothing.
Sven’s hand is two-pair, and Jack turns to Fabrizio, saying: “I’m sorry Fabrizio.”
Fabrizio starts swearing until Jack interrupts him to complete his sentence.
“I’m sorry… you’re not going to see your Mom again for a long time,” He says. “Because you’re going to America… full house, boys!”
As Fabrizio picks up the tickets, Jack is held by the throat as Olaf loads up the mother of all punches… before landing it on his idiot brother, Sven.

Jack and Fabrizio grab the tickets and the money before getting ready to hustle out of the bar with just five minutes until the titanic sets sail.
However, winning that poker game did not really bode too well for the two of them. While Sven and Olaf lived to scrap at the poker table another day, Jack would perish in the frozen wastes of the Atlantic Ocean, his grip on Rose’s raft slipping away as his life does at the end of the movie.
For Fabrizio, who had nothing to do with the game taking place and had a losing hand until Jack’s won, it was much more terrible. Going to drown after the Titanic hits the iceberg and is overflowed from the lower decks up, Fabrizio figures out how to get a lifebelt and is in the water. Having that brief fleeting hope for escape, Fabrizio frees his fastened lifeboat astutely with a penknife, just to float away from the boat itself! A long way from a lingering death in the water, or conceivable boat rescue, Fabrizio is then squashed to death by the wrecked funnel of the Titanic, which executes him quickly. For the Italian, poker truly is a brutal game.

In 1912, a 17-year-old first class passenger Rose boards 'Titanic' in Southampton with her fiance Cal and her mother Ruth DeWitt Bukater. Ruth stresses the importance of Rose's engagement, as the marriage will solve the DeWitt Bukater's financial problem. Distraught by her forced engagement, Rose considers suicide by jumping off the ship's stern. A drifter and artist named Jack Dawson stops her. Jack wins two ticket onto the Titanic from a poker game and travels as a third-class passenger with his friend Fabrizio. When Cal discovers her with Jack on the stern, Rose tells Cal that she was looking over the ship's edge in curiosity and that Jack saved her from falling. At Rose's insistence, Cal invites Jack to first-class dinner the following night to show his appreciation. Jack and Rose develop a tentative friendship.
Cal and Ruth are wary of the young third-class man, they forbid Rose from seeing Jack. But then, Rose meet him at the bow of the ship during what turns out to be the Titanic's final moments of daylight. They then go to Rose's stateroom, where she asks Jack to sketch her while naked and wearing the Heart of the Ocean, Cal's engagement present to her. Afterwards, the two evade Cal's bodyguard and make love inside a car in the ship's cargo hold.

Going afterwards to the ship's forward well deck, they witness the ship's collision with an iceberg and overhear the ship's officers and designer outline its seriousness. Rose tells Jack that they should warn her mother and Cal. Cal discovers Jack's drawing and a mocking note from Rose in his safe along with the necklace. Furious, he has his bodyguard slip the necklace into Jack's coat pocket. Accused of stealing it, Jack is arrested, taken down to the Master-at-arm's office and handcuffed to a pipe. Rose runs away from Cal and her mother
and releases Jack.

Jack and Cal persuade Rose to board another lifeboat. After she boards, Cal tells Jack that the arrangement for another lifeboat is only for himself. As Rose's boat lowers, she realizes that she cannot leave Jack, and jumps back on board the Titanic to reunite with him. Cal takes a pistol and chases them into the flooding first-class dining salon. After exhausting his ammunition, Cal realizes to his chagrin that he gave his coat with the diamond to Rose. With the situation now dire, he returns to the boat deck and boards a lifeboat by pretending to look after a lost child. Jack and Rose return to the top deck. All lifeboats have departed and passengers are falling to their deaths as the stern rises out of the water. The ship breaks in half, and the stern side rises 90-degrees into the air. As it sinks, Jack and Rose ride the stern into the ocean. Jack helps Rose onto a wall panel only able to support one person's weight. Holding the panel's edge, he assures her she will die an old woman, warm in her bed. Meanwhile, Fifth Officer Harold Lowe has commandeered a lifeboat to search for survivors. He saves Rose, but is unable to reach Jack before he dies.

The Titanic Movie is based on a real-life story of the passengers aboard on the luxurious and biggest ship on her time, believed to be unsinkable, which collides with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York, US. The sinking of the RMS Titanic caused the deaths of 1,509 people in one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history from the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard and only 705 are estimated survivors. The RMS Titanic sets it sails on April 14, 1912, four days in the crossing and hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm (ship's time : GMT -3) and gradually filled with water and foundered around 2:20 am. The wreck of the Titanic remains on the seabed, at a depth of 12,415 feet (3,784 m). Since its discovery on 1985, a thousand of artifacts and possession have been recovered and put on display at museums around the world. The disaster was greeted with worldwide shock and outrage at the huge loss of life. Titanic is one of the famous ships in history and her memory is still alive through numerous books, songs, films and etc. and one of it is the TITANIC (1997) by James Cameron.
The genre of this movie is all about the love story of a third-class and a first-class passenger which started from the beginning of the ship's first voyage and lasted forever and the sinking of the ship. The movie gives the audience the feeling of suspense and thrill because even me, myself, already seen this movie for how many times already but still, there's a great impact on my soul which really proves that this movie is a world blockbuster hit. I really love the effects; the settings; the casting,of course; and most specially the theme song which is 'My Heart Will Go On' by Celine Dion. The song tells that no matter what happens when both of you love each other, nothing can breaks you apart. And this really suits the film perfectly. Another strength of it is the Titanic ship which gives you an idea on how big the ship. Cameron wants the ship to be detailed like the real RMS Titanic so the memory and the history of it will still be preserved. And since Cameron is so fascinated by the shipwrecks, he wanted to convey the emotional message of the tragedy and the heart-breaking love story although the love story is just fictional. I also love the underwater shots which is truly breath-taking. Another strength of the film is the good lesson that you will learn from it. Below are the unforgettable lines that I really, really love so much.
-first-class dinner-
'Jack: Well, yes, ma'am, I do... I mean, I got everything I need right here with me. I got air in my lungs, a few blank sheets of paper. I mean, I love waking up in the morning not knowing what's gonna happen or, who I'm gonna meet, where I'm gonna wind up. Just the other night I was sleeping under a bridge and now here I am on the grandest ship in the world having champagne with you fine people. I figure life's a gift and I don't intend on wasting it. You don't know what hand you're gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you... to make each day count. '
-Rose on the wooden wall panel-
'Rose: I love you, Jack.
Jack: Don't you do that, don't say your goodbyes. Not yet, do you understand me?
Rose: I'm so cold.
Jack: Listen, Rose. You're gonna get out of here, you're gonna go on and you're gonna make lots of babies, and you're gonna watch them grow. You're gonna die an old... an old lady warm in her bed, not here, not this night. Not like this, do you understand me?
Rose: I can't feel my body.
Jack: Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me... it brought me to you. And I'm thankful for that, Rose. I'm thankful. You must do me this honor. Promise me you'll survive. That you won't give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let of that promise.
Rose: I promise.
Jack: Never let go.
Rose: I'll never let go, Jack. I'll never let go.'
'Rose: (letting go of Jack's hand) I'll never let go, Jack. I promise.
(she kisses his hand and watches him sink, almost falling apart before she finally climbs back into the water to call the lifeboat back)'
'...I'll never let go, Jack. I promise...' |
The weakness of the film is the discrimination of the lower classes. Cal, being jealous and angry to Jack because of the thought why Rose chooses a third-class from a first-class which has more power than the lower. Another is when the third-class passengers were locked below because of the gates that did exist which barred the passengers from the other passengers. The accepting of bribe of Officer William Murdoch from Cal which shows his lack of integrity and principle and even uses money in the midst of a disaster. The belief that Titanic is ' Unsinkable' with their boastful tone that even God himself can't sink it, said Cal to Ruth. The forced marriage of Rose to Cal just for the sake of society status. And also, Rose's unable to express her true feelings and opinions because she grew up what a lady should be.
Titanic is really indeed a great movie because of the fictional love story mixes up with the chronicle of the April 1912 Titanic sinking and also one of the best love story in the movie industry. Titanic is not a simple movie with common flow of the scenes but an incredible and unique movie with a thrill that touched the hearts of the audience even after how many years. It is a sort of okay for me that Jack died because if he's not, the story will not be a tragic as it is. It will be just a normal movie with both the lovers are alive. But then, James Cameron never failed the expectation of the audience. He did a a great job for giving almost a perfect movie and now that the Titanic 3D already released in theaters, feels like watching it for a first time. The magic is still present and the audience will shed their tears in theaters at the tragic love story for the second time.
